There are a couple of possible projects the students can choose from,

including:

 

 

  • create a podcast
  • record an original song
  • remix a open content song

 

 

The goal is to teach basic audio editing skills, and/or basic music

production skills. Tools include audio editors, software drum machines,

sequencers, and software synths.

 

 

Projects need to be about two minutes of audio per person on the team.

Teams should be limited to no more than two people.

 

Day 1

  • Introduction
  • Description of projects
    • emphasis on the need to have them ready by the end of the week

 

*Introduction to Open Content

    • what open content is
      • why it is useful
      • why current legal enviroment makes sharing work difficult
      • quick overview of collabaration, sharing, remixing, etc

 

  • Introduction to Tools

**quick overview of the desktop enviroment (where to find the apps we use, where to save files, etc)

 

    • Audacity
      • - Description of what an audio editor does
      • - quick overview of basic ops
        • - opening and saving files
        • - transport controls
        • - basic selections and editing

 

 

    • - Hydrogen
      • - Demo and description of what it is
        • - demo some drum patterns etc
        • - overview of how to save songs and how to export an audio file, and what the differences are

 

 

Day 2

  • - Hit the project goals again, get people thinking about what they want to do now that they've had a chance to mess with the tools.

 

  • - More detailed demo of Hydrogen
    • - song mode
    • - changing resolution
    • -etc

 

  • - More detailed demo of Audacity
    • - multitrack recording
    • - cut & paste
    • - mixing, levels, and volume envelopes

 

 

  • - Go over ccmixter or equilivent hosting
    • - get logged in
    • - demo browsing and how to download and open the material

 

  • - Demo a basic remixing of a song from ccmixter

 

  • - Get students working on projects

 

 

Day 3

  • - Checkpoint on projects

 

*- More detailed demo of Audacity (basically, answer any questions that came up from the work on the projects)

 

  • - Setup recording gear for any students that want to do higher quaility recordings

 

  • - Schedule time for students to use the gear

 

  • - Possible guest speakers or whatever

 

  • - project time

 

 

Day 4

 

  • - Review the IP issues involved (good chance that someone has already ran into some of these issues, so a good time to review)

 

  • - continue with any recording time that has been scheduled

 

  • - project time

 

 

Day 5

 

  • - overview of "finishing touches" for projects
    • - making sure levels are okay
    • - making sure project lengths are okay
    • - making sure content is okay

 

  • - project time

 

  • - Getting projects together
